Reiki & Nursing Practice

For over thirty years, nurses have paved the way for the introduction of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies into conventional Western healthcare. Despite initial push back, we brought biofield therapies, such as Reiki, Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch to the patient's bedside.  As we helped ease suffering and speed healing, word spread that our non-conventional methods had a positive impact on patient outcomes and that patients were asking for more.

In 2000, the California Board of Registered Nursing included alternative and complementary therapies into an RN's scope of practice.  And, recently, "Energy Field Disturbance" became a nursing diagnosis adopted by NANDA (North American Nursing Diagnosis Association).  It is defined as the "disruption of the flow of energy, or aura, surrounding a person's being that results in a disharmony of the body, mind, and/or spirit" and treatment includes the use of bio-field therapies.

Reiki in Hospitals & Clinics

We've learned that biofield therapies like Reiki can accelerate the therapeutic effects of conventional medicine.  For this reason numerous hospitals and clinics around the world now offer Reiki to their patients. It is usually nurses who provide Reiki in these settings, but more and more physicians, physical therapists, and medical social workers are using Reiki with their patients, too.

Today, Reiki is the most widely available biofield therapy offered in American hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and hospices.  The following are a just few of the many hospital programs now offering Reiki

  • M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
  • National Institutes of Health Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center
  • Portsmouth Regional Hospital
  • The California Pacific Medical Center
  • St. John's Regional Medical Center (Oxnard, CA)
  • Children's Hospital Boston
  • Yale New Haven Hospital
  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
  • New York/Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center Campus
