What Is Reiki?

Reiki (ray-key) is a simple, safe, gentle, non-invasive healing practice that promotes balance in body, mind, and spirit. It is done with a light touch on the body in a pattern that fosters deep relaxation, stress reduction and healing.  Reiki mobilizes your body's capacity for self-healing, and encourages a return to wellness.

Reiki & Your Biofield

Reiki is based on the fundamental concept that there is a biofield of energy that permeates and sustains all living organisms.  Cultures around the world have a word for this energy:  Chi, Qi, Ki, and Prana are just a few.  It is theorized that blocks and imbalances to the flow of this energy in and around the body can lead to illness and dis-ease by impairing our natural, inherent ability to heal, repair, recover and stay healthy.  It's similar to the way a wound can't heal if blood flow to the area is restricted or blocked.

If you are like most Americans, the notion of a human biofield may sound pretty weird to you. Unlike folks raised Japan, China, India, and other non-Western cultures, we think of ourselves as simply housed in a physical body.  We don't consider that we are both physical and energetic beings whose boundaries expand beyond the surface of our skin.  Most of us don't see, or consciously feel, human bio-fields, so it's hard for us to believe they exist.  But, they do.  Energy therapy practitioners can feel them. Some people can see them.  And, engineers are developing instruments capable of measuring this subtle energy.

Bio-field therapy is one domain of energy medicine designated by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), which is the center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that studies the safety and the efficacy of complementary therapies such as Reiki.  It is often referred to as "energy therapy" or sometimes "laying on of hands."  Biofield or energy healing involves the reorganization and balancing of the human energy field, or subtle energy body, which exists within and extends about 18-inches beyond the human body.   [Top]

Reiki Treats Body, Mind, & Spirit

Biofield therapies, like Reiki, do not target a specific body part or a particular constellation of symptoms.  For this reason, they don't "cure" a particular problem, but rather promote healing.  In this context, healing is defined as a return to a state of balance, harmony, equilibrium  or homeostasis.  The effects of biofield therapies are experienced on all levels of being: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual; therefore, they are described as holistic.  Re-establishing system balance supports the body's ability to heal itself.  [Top]

Reiki & the Healer Within

Traditional Reiki practitioners do not assess, diagnose, or  deliberately  reorganize or manipulate your biofield. Observing a Reiki treatment, you might wonder if the practitioner is doing anything at all.  During a treatment, a Reiki practitioner is very still and quiet, moving only to change hand positions.  We make no conscious attempt to fix /heal /cure you or to control the flow of energy in your  biofield.  We use a standard set of hand positions that rarely varies.  It is your body's inner wisdom, your innate ability to self-heal, the Healer Within, that directs the process. During a treatment, a Reiki practitioner may perceive a sense of flowing in his or her hands that occurs spontaneously in response to your need for balance. This may or may not occur over an area you've described as symptomatic.  In this way, Reiki treatments are always customized.     [Top]

Reiki Benefits Everyone

Reiki will help you feel better and heal better. People of all ages, backgrounds, religions, and walks-of-life have enjoyed the benefits of Reiki treatments.  A series of Reiki treatments is the best way to experience the power of this healing practice.  However, with just one treatment most people say they experience:

  • A state of deep relaxation
  • An easing acute and chronic pain
  • Relaxing of tight, tense, sore muscles
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • A greater overall feeling of well-being
  • Longer, better, deeper sleep
  • More vitality and energy

With continued treatments from a Reiki practitioner, or by making Reiki your own  daily, self-care practice, you can experience:

  • Faster healing of physical injuries and wounds
  • Improved immune system functioning
  • A letting to of old emotional patterns
  • Easier access to inner wisdom and creativity
  • Expanded personal awareness
  • A deepened sense of spiritual connection
